My Stout Spout

(A Simple DIY Fix)

First of all, many thanks to Bill Withers for his encouragement to try your hand at DIY.

Today I developed a better means to empty output. I call it my Stout Spout. For a very long time, I have been a searcher and seeker of the perfect application for my ileostomy housing product, or as I refer to it, “Better Bags & Stoma Housing.”

I have test-driven many free samples only to be leaked upon, stuck upon, unstuck upon, and the ever so dreaded blowout…in general, always disappointed. Each product had things I liked and things I didn't like. Not one was a better replacement for what I currently use.

Basically, I looked for a product(s) to meet my own personal needs, which are:

Comfort

Reliability

Trust

Security

Minimum Bulk

Minimum Equipment

Easy Application

Easy Removal

Clear Front View

Filter-less Bag

Easy Output Drain

Not necessarily in that order.

Alas, I believe I have found the answer for such a thing. I found a simple add-on to my current equipment would meet my requirements. I was most envious of other products for the firm outspout and Velcro closing. My DIY for my current product was… by adding a 2” piece of Curad translucent tape to each side of the spout, it firmed up the area yet still makes it flexible to fold back and not overly bulk, allowing a nice tight fit for my clip closure. This was the one thing I could not get with my pouch after 4 years of stoma life and many trials and errors of alternatives. I finally figured this out…okay, I admit - I am a slow learner, especially for such a simple fix.

So far, this ConvaTec Pouch has been my best alternative, and now my stout spout makes it very close to perfect.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

They say:  Necessity is the mother of invention.

I say: Bill is the father of Stomavention.

Hello BB.
Thank you for the complement but all my efforts can be put down to that cliché: 'Necessity is the mother of invention'.

Best wishes

Bill

OMG…too funny - thanks for the great chuckle this a.m. Good luck in your search…if you are able to find such a woman, and you are eventually disillusioned, I think your worst fear may be easy removal!!! jb

Looks like you're wearing the Convatec ActiveLife. Those are the best pouches ever! I'm on the Convatec ActiveLife also, but the convex. The spout is quite small, and I get what you're saying about keeping the spout clean. I rinse and use a wipe at the end of mine.
