Drink something with beet juice in it. It will tell you how quickly things pass through your system and that liquid does come out in your ostomy bag. I drank a Bolthouse Farms energy drink made with pineapple juice, beet juice, and passion fruit juice, and within 3 hours there was the start of purple liquid in my bag, and by 5 hours there was a whole lot of purple liquid in my bag. And I only drank about half a cup of the juice.

It's like artwork, isn't it! I remember getting dark red in my bag, getting a little nervous thinking it might be blood and then recalling that I ate beets. If you eat several colored foods at once, they may come out one after the other, like rainbow poop!

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.

If you do get a rainbow, wait a little longer, and a pot of gold might be next.

Oh, if I eat beets, I definitely get red or purple output. I just didn't think about beet juice doing it. I guess I thought because it was a liquid, it might not come out of my ostomy, but sure enough, it did. And in record time.

Just because you have liquids doesn't mean your output will be liquid. When you have an ostomy and you don't have all your digestive organs, your digestive system absorbs differently than from people that have a normal bowel. Sugar intake has a lot to do with that also.
