Tomorrow is my 1-year stomaversary for my twin stomas. On the one hand, I can't believe it's been a whole year. On the other hand, I feel like I've been pooping and urinating in front of forever.

But either way, happy stomaversary to my twins. 🍾🥂🥳🎂🎊🕯🎉🎁🎈🍰

Fay,

I am one of those few people who still have a lot of output at night. However, I suffer from short gut syndrome after seven bowel surgeries that led to the loss of much of my small intestine as well as my large intestine from the initial bowel cancer surgery. It does get better over time as your system adjusts, but an ileostomy can be a challenging adjustment. It's important to connect with a good Enterostomal Nurse - ET nurses who can help you problem-solve over time. It's been five years since my initial surgery, and I had a great visit with a new ET nurse in December. He really helped me with the problem of high output at night. I had been getting up every 90-120 minutes to empty my high output bag because of filling. If I slept for three hours without emptying, I would have problems. My ET nurse helped my husband and me make a nighttime collection system using a Rubbermaid juice container with a handle and my old CPAP hose. This is connected to one of my two-piece high output bags and allows for continual drainage. It isn't pretty, but it has been a real lifesaver. I guess the real message I want to share is to stick with it, find a nurse who you can work with, and together you will find solutions to whatever challenges you face. This website is also an important support for me and others. There is nothing you will go through that others haven't already faced and figured out. There is so much wisdom here. Read the materials they've put together for newbies. There are a lot of great suggestions to use. I hope things get better quickly for you.

Happy stomaversary, Susan! So glad you're part of this group 🤗. I know what you mean about time. Occasionally, I try to remember what it was like to poop normally, and I'm able to remember the sensation, and it's been fifteen years for me. The year and a half before that, the poops were painful, so I probably blocked them out of my memory.

Happy stomaversary. Congrats on it being one year. I only have one stoma, but it's been two and a half years since I had this one. I can't believe it's been that long. I had one before this one; it was in the wrong location and had to be moved, and a new one created. Anyway, I'm very happy you are adjusted to your twins after a year.

Happy anniversary, my stoma sister in another country! Mine will be 3 years in September. It doesn't feel that long, and no, I haven't gotten anywhere with my situation with no food and pain. It's anything I eat now, so I only have one meal a day and snacks: crisp biscuits, ice cream, yogurt, and lots of fluids. Oh, and I got nutrition drinks from dietitians as well now, so I need to try to drink 6 a day. That's what my body needs, apparently. So I'm just plodding on at the minute. It's very frustrating and annoying, but hey ho, I will keep going. Big love to our twins! xxx

I'm glad they've given you nutritional drinks. That should help keep you from sliding further down.

But they really need to find the source of the problem!

I know you are actively advocating for yourself. Stay strong, sister!
