Does Stoma Color Variation Indicate a Problem?

When it comes to stoma care, noticing changes in color can be a bit concerning. A common question is whether the redness of a stoma, whether bright or dark, is something to worry about.

Here are some helpful points to consider:

1. Healthy stomas can range in color from bright red to darker red. This variation is normal and can change with your body temperature or the foods you eat.

2. Be alert for warning signs. If your stoma turns pale or white, it might indicate a lack of blood flow (ischemia). A very dark or black stoma could suggest tissue death (necrosis). Also, seek help if your stoma is painful, bleeds unexpectedly, or stops working properly.

3. For peace of mind, you can compare your stoma with online images of healthy stomas to see if yours looks normal.

4. If you’re still concerned, it’s a good idea to get a quick assessment from your primary-care doctor or a WOC (Wound-Ostomy-Continence) nurse. They can provide professional advice and reassurance.
