Hollister 85711 - Leaking Closure System - Seeking Solutions!

This topic is about a person who recently had surgery to repair a prolapsed ileostomy and is now using a new type of ostomy pouch, the Hollister 85711 soft-convex one-piece. They are experiencing leaks with this pouch, particularly when the output is very watery. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. The person found that the leaks were due to not fully securing the Velcro-style closure. Ensuring the hard plastic Velcro strip is completely snapped together can prevent leaks.

2. Many users of the Hollister "lock-n-roll" closures, including the 85711 model, have not experienced problems. They recommend applying firm pressure to fully engage the Velcro strip.

3. With very liquid output, it's important to carefully squeeze across the entire width of the Velcro closure each time you empty the pouch to prevent seepage.

4. If you continue to experience leaks, consider contacting Hollister. Some users have had their products replaced free of charge after reporting issues.

5. Alternative systems that have been found to be leak-free by some users include:
- Coloplast one-piece drainable convex pouches used with a barrier ring, which can last up to 7 days without blowouts.
- Two-piece Convatec systems paired with Convatec (Eakin) Cohesive barrier rings.

6. If your hospital only stocks Hollister products and you are sensitive to their adhesives or closure style, it might be helpful to request your usual brand in advance or bring your own supplies.
