To Reverse or Not: Deciding on My End Ileostomy Reversal

Deciding whether to reverse an end ileostomy after emergency surgery for Crohn’s disease is a significant decision. If you find yourself in this situation, here are some points to consider:

- The choice to have a reversal is entirely yours. No one can force you to undergo another surgery if you’re not ready or willing.

- Before making a decision, gather all the necessary medical information:
- Will your colon be reconnected, or has it been removed?
- Is your terminal ileum still intact?
- What kind of lifestyle do you envision for yourself after surgery?

- There is no need to rush. Take your time to think it over and have multiple discussions with your stoma nurse and colorectal surgeon or consultant.

- Be aware that complications can arise after a reversal. For instance, someone without Crohn’s who recently had a reversal is still dealing with significant gastrointestinal issues and is unsure if it was the right choice.

- Consider the perspectives of your partner or family members, as they might feel that keeping the ileostomy could help maintain your independence. However, prioritize your own needs and comfort.

- If you decide to keep the ileostomy long-term, future medical advice might include the removal of any remaining colon, rectum, or anus. Discuss the likelihood and implications of this with your doctor.

- Reach out to the UK Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Association to connect with people who have experienced reversals. Hearing from peers can help clarify what to expect and assist in your decision-making process.
