A Day in the Life of Erik Part 2: Five Years Later

Living with recurrent peristomal hernias can be quite a journey, as shared by someone who has been through a lot over the past five years. This person, now 42, has had five abdominal surgeries and is preparing for a sixth to repair two more hernias. Despite moving his stoma to the left side last year, he feels caught in a cycle of surgeries that don't seem to provide lasting relief. Alongside these health challenges, his personal life has also changed significantly. Once married with a stable job and two children, he is now divorced, unemployed, and living with his parents. Yet, he remains grateful for life and hopeful about finding a partner who will accept him as he is.

Here are some insights and advice from others who have faced similar challenges:

1. Many people find that repeated surgeries for peristomal hernias don't always succeed. Some decide to stop having surgeries and instead manage their hernias in other ways.

2. Hernias coming back is a common issue. One person shared that they are dealing with their fourth hernia repair since getting an ileostomy in 2010 and expressed feeling exhausted by the process.

3. It's important to be cautious about lifting heavy objects too soon after surgery, as this can lead to hernia formation. Following post-operative weight-lifting restrictions carefully is recommended.

4. Some ostomates who engage in regular bodybuilding have noticed that gradual and properly supervised strength training might help prevent hernias, although results can vary from person to person.
