Getting Air to the Skin Around the Stoma

This topic is about finding ways to let the skin around a stoma breathe, especially overnight, without the usual wafer or pouch. The person is looking for ideas or products that could temporarily replace the wafer to allow air to reach the skin. Here are some thoughts and suggestions shared by others:

1. Consider using the 3M No-Sting Barrier Film spray to protect the skin while allowing it to breathe.

2. Many people dream of sleeping on their stomachs or spending a night without a wafer or pouch. After many years with an ileostomy, there's hope for a new solution that allows for longer, safe "air time."

3. General skin-care routine:
- Some people keep their appliance on for 7–14 days, then wash with hot water and antibacterial soap, dry thoroughly, and reapply.
- Small skin irritations can be treated with the 3M No-Sting Barrier Film spray.
- Sudocrem is used by some for sore patches, though there are questions about whether it affects adhesion.

4. Short, controlled "air breaks" during changes:
- Allow the skin to breathe for 20–30 minutes while changing the appliance. Sit or lie on a towel, keep a paper towel under the stoma, and schedule changes for early morning when output is lighter.
- Some people stay bare for an hour while watching TV or right after a shower.

5. DIY overnight ideas (noted as impractical but possible):
- Cut a hole in a foam mattress, line it with plastic, and place a receptacle underneath; or modify box-spring slats to support a similar cut-out.
- Use or modify a donut pillow for a smaller version of the above idea.
- Buy a REDCAMP XXL Folding Camping Cot and cut a hole where the stoma rests, positioning a garbage can below.

6. Product alternatives for minimal coverage:
- An "intimacy" pouch, which is a very small pouch meant for sexual activity, can be used. It's reusable and less bulky between the thighs at night.

7. Situational options by stoma type:
- Colostomates who irrigate may safely stay barrier-free for several hours. However, ileostomates and urostomates have continuous output, making long air exposure risky.

8. Bottom line from experienced users:
- Currently, there is no commercial system that eliminates the need for a wafer while ensuring cleanliness and sleep safety.
- Most people rely on frequent, brief air exposure and protective sprays or creams to maintain healthy skin until a practical overnight solution is invented.
