Managing Constipation with an Ostomy and Cerebral Palsy - Tips and Advice

This topic is about managing constipation when you have a colostomy and also live with cerebral palsy. After undergoing emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction in June 2023, the person is now facing challenges with constipation and is looking for practical solutions, whether through diet or products. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Fluids that can help stimulate output:
- Consider drinking black coffee, black tea, Coca-Cola, grape juice, prune juice, apple juice, pickle juice, or even a small amount of fizzy wine. Keep in mind that carbonated drinks like Coke or sparkling wine might cause gas or ballooning.

2. Daily hydration and fiber basics, especially important for a colostomy:
- Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day.
- Aim for 25 to 35 grams of dietary fiber from sources like whole-grain breads, cereals, fiber bars, fresh fruits, and vegetables to help bulk up the stool.
- Pair this with regular physical activity, such as a brisk 30-minute walk.

3. Osmotic laxatives:
- Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) can be taken as one capful daily, or twice daily if needed.
- Other over-the-counter laxatives might be effective, but it's important to use them under medical supervision if needed long-term.

4. Quick tactics for breaking blockages that some have found useful:
- Drinking two pots of strong black tea or large amounts of apple juice, sometimes combined with several miles of walking, has helped some people resolve blockages.
- Be aware that opioid-based pain medications like Tylenol 3 can lead to blockages or constipation.

5. Reference resource:
- The American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons offers a patient page on constipation, which can be found at: https://fascrs.org/patients/diseases-and-conditions/a-z/constipation-expanded-version

6. Tailor advice to your ostomy type:
- Remember that strategies suitable for a colostomy, such as a high-fiber diet, may not be appropriate for an ileostomy. Always consider your specific stoma type when applying general constipation advice.
