Tic Tac Mints and Irritable Ileum - Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who was using Tic Tac mints as a cost-effective way to control odor in their ileostomy pouch. However, they started experiencing abdominal discomfort, which they called an "irritable ileum." When they stopped using the Tic Tacs, the discomfort went away. They are now using a different routine to manage odor and are curious if others have had similar experiences with mints.

Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. The current routine involves using a lubricating deodorant and M9 Deodorant & Lubricant drops twice a day, with nothing added during other daily empties. This seems to prevent irritation.

2. The poster noticed that dietary changes have helped reduce odor, although fish and onions still cause noticeable smells.

3. Previously, they used 2 Tic Tacs about 4-5 times a day, along with a lubricating deodorant 1-2 times a day.

4. The poster consumes a lot of sugar, including natural sugars from fruits, and is not interested in a low-sugar diet.

5. Some people find they don't need deodorants unless they eat foods known to produce strong odors, like fish.

6. There is a suggestion that the irritation might be due to the mint flavoring or preservatives in the Tic Tacs.

7. Another thought is that the candies might ferment or create an osmotic effect in the pouch, which could irritate the stoma or ileum.

8. The sugar content in Tic Tacs was mentioned as a possible irritant. Trying sugar-free Tic Tacs could help determine if sugar is the issue.

9. No one else reported the same irritation, but they found the experiment and its results useful for future reference.
