Morning Abdominal Pain After Colostomy: Is This Normal?

This topic is about someone who had a colostomy five months ago and is experiencing severe abdominal pain each morning when they first get up. The pain is described as a muscular "hot spot" on the right side of the colon and tends to ease as they move around. They are curious if this is a normal part of healing after surgery or if it could be related to their diet. Additionally, they have noticed hair loss and skin issues and hope these will improve as they recover.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Consider core-strengthening physical therapy. Some people have found that physical therapy, whether done in a hospital, at home, or as an outpatient, can help eliminate similar postoperative abdominal pain. It might be worth seeking a referral for physical therapy if you haven't already.

2. If you've already tried physical therapy or if the pain continues or gets worse, it's important to consult your surgeon or gastroenterologist. Persistent or worsening pain is not typically considered normal.

3. Remember that at five months post-surgery, your body is still adjusting. While some intermittent pain that goes away quickly can be part of the normal healing process, it's still a good idea to discuss ongoing symptoms with your doctor.

4. Be aware of Post-Sepsis Syndrome, which can appear months after recovery and include symptoms like balance problems, hair loss, dry or peeling skin, and fatigue. These symptoms might occur alongside abdominal pain but are separate issues, so medical follow-up is recommended.
