Abdominal binder for stoma hernia? Need advice!

This topic is about finding the right abdominal binder or hernia belt for managing a parastomal hernia. A parastomal hernia can occur after surgery, and finding a comfortable and effective way to support it is important, especially if you have concerns about comfort and breathing. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have been in similar situations:

1. Many people have found that the right hernia belt does not crush the pouch and can be worn comfortably throughout the day. It's all about finding the right style and size for you.

2. Fulcionel Hernia Belts are made from soft, stretchy material that fits under the pouch without interfering with its function. Some users have noticed that their appliance wear time increased significantly with this belt.

3. Omnigon BOM102 or "TCB Total Control" belts are also recommended for providing firm yet flexible support.

4. Nu-Hope Laboratories offers ostomy binders specifically designed for those with hernias. These include pre-cut openings for the stoma, making them a convenient option.

5. WeirComfees hernia belts are another brand to consider. You can search online for different models and sizes.

6. Standard 4-inch-wide hernia/support belts can work well if fitted correctly, without compressing the pouch.

7. For a custom DIY option, some have successfully used an off-the-shelf women’s girdle, cutting a hole at the stoma level. This can be an inexpensive and effective solution.

8. In some places, like France, ostomates can receive two free support belts per year, each with a hole for the pouch, along with supportive underpants that cradle the bag. This shows that there are commercially available options designed for comfort and support.

9. Practical tips include gently pushing in the hernia before fastening the belt, choosing breathable and elastic fabrics to reduce tightness and claustrophobia, and measuring accurately to ensure the belt fits well. Underwear or shorts with an internal pouch can also add comfort and prevent the appliance from dangling.
