Looking for Night Drainage Solution for Colostomy

This topic is about finding a solution for managing high-output colostomies at night. The person who started the discussion is having trouble sleeping because their colostomy pouch fills up quickly, and they haven't found a commercial night-drainage system specifically for colostomies. They've tried making their own system but are looking for better options. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. The Hollister High-Output pouch HO18013:
- This pouch works well only if the output is completely liquid, similar to an ileostomy.
- Some members suggest checking all manufacturers' websites or asking a wound-care nurse for samples to find a suitable product.

2. Coloplast Ileo Night Pouch, product #2837:
- This is a specially designed overnight collection bag made from standard pouch material. It's about 3 inches wide and 5 feet long, hanging to the floor and snapping onto a Coloplast baseplate.
- It can hold over 2 liters, which often allows for 4 or more hours of sleep before needing to be emptied.
- Some users trim out the internal tube to make cleaning easier.
- Coloplast in the USA offers free samples and product support at 877-858-2656.

3. General observations and troubleshooting tips:
- If you need to empty your pouch very frequently, it might indicate that your stool is very watery or that your stoma is behaving more like an ileostomy. It's a good idea to verify your stoma type and discuss with a clinician if the output seems unusual for a colostomy.
- For thicker stool that clogs narrow tubing, look for pouches or tubing with a ¾–1 inch diameter outlet, or consider modifying existing products to widen the flow path.
- If you have limited hand strength or dexterity, consider using two-piece systems. These allow you to switch between a daytime pouch and a large overnight pouch without having to manipulate the tail closure.
