Gentle Skin-Safe Method for Removing Adhesive Bags/Caps

This topic is all about finding gentle and skin-friendly ways to remove ostomy bags and caps. The main idea is to protect the delicate skin around the stoma by using a technique that involves pushing the skin away from the adhesive rather than peeling the adhesive off the skin. This approach has been found to improve skin condition significantly. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. After removing the ostomy appliance, protect the skin by applying a thick layer of diaper-rash ointment like Desitin, or if that's not available, use plain oils such as olive oil or peanut oil.

2. Once the area is clean, consider massaging a small amount of emu oil around the stoma to keep the skin moisturized.

3. Sometimes, you might be able to remove the wafer without using an adhesive remover. However, if you need one to prevent skin damage, AllKare Adhesive Remover Wipes are a good option. Just be aware that Medicaid has reduced the monthly supply from 100 to 50 wipes, so plan accordingly.

4. If peeling the wafer is painful or if your skin is particularly fragile, especially around fistula sites or if you need to change pouches every 48 hours, using an adhesive remover can be very helpful.

5. Be careful with using oily soaps, lotions, or heavy ointments right before applying a new appliance, as leftover oils can affect how well the wafer sticks to your skin.

6. Keep using the technique of pushing the skin away from the adhesive instead of pulling the adhesive off the skin. This method helps reduce skin trauma and keeps the area healthier.
