Causes of Inflammation Around Your Stoma

This topic is about dealing with inflammation and severe pain around the stoma, which can be quite distressing. The person sharing their experience had intense pain that made it hard to stand, leading to an emergency room visit. After some tests, they were told the pain might be due to inflammation around the stoma, possibly caused by recent weight gain, lifting heavy objects, or letting the pouch get too full. They were advised to use acetaminophen for pain relief and are curious if others have faced similar issues. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Opening size and skin seal:
- Make sure the wafer opening is not too large to prevent output from irritating the skin. Cut the hole slightly smaller and use ostomy paste around the edge for a snug fit.

2. Reducing pouch weight and drag:
- Tape the top of the pouch to your skin to reduce the weight on the wafer.
- Empty the pouch more often to prevent it from becoming heavy.

3. External support:
- Consider wearing ostomy-support underwear with a pocket to hold the pouch.
- Use an ostomy belt for extra support, especially when standing or moving around.

4. Activity precautions:
- Avoid heavy lifting to lower the risk of hernias and swelling around the stoma.

5. Possible medical issues and follow-up:
- Since "inflammation" is a broad term, seek a second opinion promptly. Severe pain might indicate conditions like pyoderma gangrenosum, which requires early diagnosis.

6. Skin-care measures while healing:
- If the skin is inflamed from output contact, let the area air out by sitting over a tub to dry it thoroughly.
- Apply ostomy adhesive powder on irritated skin before attaching a new appliance, but only after the skin is dry.

7. General healthcare tip:
- Be proactive with your healthcare providers. Ensure all specialists communicate and don't hesitate to ask for answers or referrals.
