Dealing with Hernia Around Stoma - Normal Discomfort?

This topic is about dealing with the discomfort that can come with a recurrent parastomal hernia, and understanding what level of discomfort might be considered normal. A parastomal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot around a stoma, and it can be a recurring issue for some people. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have experienced similar situations:

1. Discomfort levels can vary widely. Some people experience little to no discomfort and continue with their daily activities, while others find any ongoing pain to be unusual and choose to discuss it with their surgeon.

2. The decision to undergo surgery often depends on the level of pain or the risk of obstruction. Many surgeons prefer to wait unless there is significant pain, a blockage, or the hernia is growing rapidly.

3. There are different repair options and experiences:
- Some have used absorbable tissue reinforcement, like "Bio A" from W. L. Gore & Associates, during a colostomy takedown, which has led to minimal discomfort and good function.
- The modified Sugarbaker procedure, performed by both colorectal and plastic surgeons, has been successful for some, providing a "tight" repair even after multiple previous surgeries.

4. It's important to be well-informed about mesh and other implantable materials before agreeing to a repair. Consider:
- Checking out safety information and patient experiences on the Facebook group "Medical Device Problems."
- Watching the Netflix documentary "The Bleeding Edge" for insights into medical-device safety issues, including hernia mesh.

5. Large parastomal hernias can sometimes be managed without surgery, but it's crucial to keep a close eye on them. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience pain, a blockage, or increasing nausea.
