How to empty and rinse clip pouches?

This topic is all about finding effective ways to empty and rinse ostomy pouches that use clips instead of Velcro. The person sharing their experience has recently switched to clip-closed pouches and is finding it a bit tricky to manage, especially since the tail of the pouch feels floppy and hard to grip. They also have a one-piece system, which means they can't remove it every time they need to empty it, making rinsing a bit of a challenge. Here are some tips and insights that might help:

1. Using a peri-bottle for rinsing:
- Keep the pouch tail upright and unclip it. Some people use two clips for extra security.
- Cuff the opening outward, similar to rolling up a shirt sleeve.
- Use a hospital peri-bottle to squirt water inside, then use your index and middle fingers to help slide the stool out.
- For visual guidance, you can search for videos on YouTube about how to empty an ileostomy bag with a clip.

2. "Ketchup bottle" hot-water flush:
- Purchase clear plastic condiment bottles, which you can find at places like Walmart.
- Fill them with hot water that is comfortable to the touch. Insert the nozzle between the pouch lips and squirt in about a quarter of the bottle.
- Swish the water around, massage any thick output, point the pouch downward, and drain it.
- You can do a second flush just for the tail. Keep two bottles of hot water handy for this.
- One user mentioned using Hollister 82612 convex one-piece bags and has not experienced any clip failures after a year.

3. Lubricating deodorizer drops:
- Add 8 to 10 drops each time you empty the pouch. This helps keep the interior slick, controls odor, and makes it easier for the contents to slide out. The specific brand wasn't mentioned.

4. Alternative closure suggestion:
- Some people prefer using Velcro tail closures instead of clips. They roll the tail up and secure it with low-tack blue tape for added comfort against the leg. This method works with two-piece drainable systems.

These tips might make managing clip-closed pouches a bit easier and more comfortable.
