Hello everyone, today I got home from the doctor's office. Having black, watery output from my ostomy, I was wondering, as I'm a newbie, should I go to the hospital?

Some more details, please.

For example, how long have you had this stoma? Is it colostomy or ileostomy?

Do you have UC or CD?

Has this black output happened before? What did you eat differently?

The doctor's appointment today? Was it in regards to the output? Or just a follow-up appointment?

You see, the more details you give, the better we all can help.

You are in the right place. Sit tight as others chime in.

I have had watery output as an ileostomy... it comes and goes. Depends on foods... scary stuff indeed... but not knowing how long you have had the experience before, I can't say for sure how to help or advise.

Ileostomies have watery output... fact. Gotta learn to bulk it up though.

There is no such thing here as too much information (TMI)... we can help... just give us what you'd like to share.

Welcome. Good to have you on board.

Angelica- As usual, you've written another interesting post. February 5th, 2019, was my reversal surgery after having an ileo for 6 months. I'm one of those fortunate success stories. Of course, things are different now, and I still have to be careful about what and how much I eat, as I don't have a colon. At first, I was afraid to leave the house. My biggest fear was having to use a public bathroom and have the toilet not flush! Even now, when I know that I'll be in someone else's home, I won't eat anything beforehand. I read other people's stories and sometimes feel guilty for having had it so easy, not to mention that I have a significant other who is 100 percent supportive. I've gotten so much out of this website and truly feel for those of you who have it so much worse than I. But I feel it necessary to let folks hear about the success stories.

Hi,

How long have you had your stoma? If your hospital has a colorectal surgeon on call, you can always call and ask to speak with them and they can advise you. If it worries you, then yes, go ahead and get checked out.

Black normally means old blood. I would get it checked out. If you have had a recent operation done lately, it could be from that. Regards, IGGIE

I often have very dark to black output from my ileostomy. This usually occurs while getting rid of breakfast, which contains about 2 1/2 cups of fruit. Of that, a cup and a half are blueberries and blackberries. Other times during the day, things are the normal yellowish/green or some variation thereof. But since I take 2 mg of loperamide a day, liquid output is seldom an issue. The other way around, actually.

As Warrior said, we need a little more information, please. What did your doctor say about the black liquid stool? What did you eat that day/evening? Is it a one-off or several days? Any pain? Any weight loss post-surgery? Xx

Hydrox cookies and blueberries produce a beautiful black stool. So does blood and bleeding from the GI tract. Pepto-Bismol is famous for causing black stools too. I assume there are no iron tablets too. If food and medicines are not a cause, you need to see your doctor.
