Stoma Pain - Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who has had an ileostomy since 2016 and is experiencing sharp, deep pain around their stoma. The pain feels like the stoma is being "strangled" and comes and goes. They are seeking possible causes or explanations for this discomfort.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. It's important to consult a medical professional as soon as possible. If your current doctor can't find the cause, consider getting a second opinion.

2. Intestinal gas might be a trigger. Pay attention to whether the pain occurs after eating foods that are known to cause gas, like onions, garlic, certain vegetables, and spices. Also, notice if there's an increase in gas output after the pain.

3. Collect more details to help with diagnosis:
- Note the exact location of the pain around the stoma. Is it all around or just on one side?
- Consider the underlying condition that led to the ileostomy and whether it is still active.
- Observe if the pain is related to eating, stoma output, or any other activities.

4. Gallstones could be a cause of intermittent, intense pain in the upper-right abdomen. It might be helpful to ask for a liver ultrasound or MR scan to rule this out.

5. Adhesions, which are internal scar tissues, could also be causing the pain. They can be tricky to treat, but an ostomy nurse (ET nurse) can evaluate the situation and refer you to the right specialists.

6. Others have reported experiencing similar symptoms. While some haven't found a medical solution yet, they suggest sharing any new discoveries with the community for mutual support and information.
