Returning to Work

Returning to a physically demanding job with a colostomy can feel daunting, especially if your role requires standing all day. It's understandable to feel anxious about this transition. Fortunately, there are several strategies and pieces of advice that can help make this process smoother and more manageable.

- Mind-set matters: Many people emphasize that returning to work is only as challenging as you make it. Try to stay positive and remember that you are in control, not your pouch.

- Be prepared: Keep spare pouches, wafers, wipes, disposal bags, and other necessary supplies at your workplace. This way, you can handle any unexpected leaks quickly and discreetly.

- Colostomy irrigation and diet control: If suitable for you, regular irrigation and mindful food choices can help you predict or even eliminate output during the workday, which can significantly reduce stress.

- Extra security for active jobs: Consider using reinforcement tape around the flange to prevent the pouch from catching on equipment or edges. Many people also find wearing an ostomy or hernia support belt helpful for both protection and hernia prevention.

- Ease into full duty: If possible, start with shorter shifts or temporary lifting restrictions until you regain your stamina and confidence.

- Mutual encouragement: Having a supportive workplace and maintaining a positive outlook can make a significant difference. Connecting with others who are returning to work around the same time can also provide mutual support and encouragement.
