Small Holes in Lock and Roll Closure of Hollister Ostomy Bags

This topic is about a problem some people are experiencing with Hollister ostomy pouches. Specifically, there are tiny holes developing in the Lock ‘n Roll tail closure of these pouches, and this issue has been noticed in several recent batches. Here are some helpful tips and advice for dealing with this situation:

1. Quality and Warranty: It's not uncommon for pin-holes to appear in ostomy pouches from Hollister and other brands like Convatec. If you encounter this issue, reach out to the manufacturer. They often replace faulty products or exchange the lot. Returning defective batches and trying a different lot might resolve the problem.

2. Wear-time: Make sure not to exceed the recommended 4-day wear period for your pouch. Going beyond this timeframe can lead to normal wear and tear, which might look like pin-holes. It's best to replace the pouch within the suggested period.

3. Debris in the Tail:
- Hard particles such as salt crystals, undigested food pieces, or fruit seeds can get trapped in the rolled section of the pouch.
- When you close the tail, especially if you start from the middle and slide outward, these particles can be pushed to the ends and puncture the plastic.
- To prevent this, wipe out the tail with toilet paper to remove any solids before closing it.

4. Diet Awareness: If you eat a lot of small-seeded fruits like raspberries, you might notice more pin-holes. Carefully cleaning the tail can help prevent this issue.

5. IGGIE Clip Use:
- The IGGIE clip won't worsen leaks if you fold the tail over at least twice. Folding it three times completely covers the Velcro and provides padding.
- If the clip rubs on the Velcro, try increasing the number of folds. Not folding, or folding only once when extra space is needed (like on flights), can cause rubbing that weakens the plastic.

6. If careful cleaning and correct folding do not stop new bags from leaking, consider them defective and request replacements from Hollister.
