Help for Sore Skin Around Stoma

This topic is about finding effective treatments for sore and irritated skin around a stoma, which can be a common issue for those with an ileostomy. If you're experiencing this, here are some practical tips and advice that might help soothe and protect your skin:

1. Before applying the wafer, use a dedicated skin prep or barrier wipe or spray. This can help create a protective layer on your skin.

2. Consider using liquid skin protectants that are specifically designed for broken or weeping skin. Some options include:
- Marathon by Medline
- Cavlion™ 3M Advanced Skin Protectant by 3M

3. Try Salts Healthcare Aloe Rings. Many people have found these helpful in clearing up severe irritation around the stoma and maintaining healthy skin over time.

4. Calamine lotion is another option that some people find soothing for irritated skin.

5. Here are some technique tips to consider:
- Cut the wafer to fit precisely around the current size and shape of your stoma. This helps prevent any gaps that could allow effluent to reach your skin.
- Clean the area with ostomy-safe, residue-free soap. Make sure to rinse well and let your skin dry completely before applying any products.
- Warm the wafer by holding it between your hands or against your body to improve its adhesion.
- When changing your appliance, inspect the removed ring or wafer for any signs of leakage. If you notice any seepage, adjust the fit or products accordingly.

6. If you use powder, apply it lightly and then "seal" it with your chosen skin prep or liquid protectant. Some people prefer using the bottle formulation over the spray for more targeted application.
