Pressure Sensation After Long-Term Ileostomy

This topic is about someone who has had an ileostomy for 45 years and recently started feeling pressure in the rectal area, even though their anus was surgically closed. They are curious if others have experienced something similar. Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. If you feel new pressure or pain in the rectal or pelvic area after many years, it might indicate some underlying activity. It's important to see a surgeon, gastroenterologist, or primary physician as soon as possible.

2. There could be mechanical causes for this sensation:
- Slow stoma output or a partial blockage might create back-pressure that you feel in the pelvic area.
- Lifting heavy objects, like 40-pound bags of bird seed or potting soil, has caused similar pressure for some people.

3. Functional or nerve-related causes might also be considered:
- Pelvic floor dysfunction is something to think about and should be evaluated by a specialist.
- Pudendal nerve entrapment, especially in those with extensive pelvic or anal surgical scarring, can feel like deep pressure or pain. One person found temporary relief by placing an ice pack between the buttocks.

4. While waiting for a medical review, here are some ideas for managing symptoms:
- Warm sitz baths or a heating pad might help some people, while others might prefer using ice.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) can help with pain control.
- Make sure to get adequate rest, and if you suspect an infection, ask your doctor about antibiotics.
