Ileostomy Life Hacks: Clothing, Cleaning, and Managing Sweat

This topic is all about sharing practical tips and tricks for living with an ileostomy. Whether it's about finding the right clothing, keeping things clean, or managing sweat, these insights aim to make daily life a bit easier. Here are some helpful ideas:

1. Clothing Modifications:
- Create DIY boxer-briefs with a sewn-in fabric pocket. Cut a hole just below the waistband so the pouch can pass through and rest in the pocket, keeping the plastic off your skin.
- Consider using women’s tube tops or homemade versions from swimsuit fabric around the abdomen to hold the pouch close and hide its outline. They are comfortable for everyday wear, intimacy, and swimming.
- Use a Surgilast tubular elastic dressing retainer to keep the bag flat against your body.
- A 1-inch ostomy belt can help prevent blow-outs.
- For water activities, a neoprene fabric cover with a zipper can keep the appliance secure and relatively dry.

2. Cleaning Routines:
- Use a three-step wipe process: start with a tissue, follow with a baby wipe, and finish with another tissue.
- Add deodorant drops and absorbent crystals after each emptying.
- Empty the pouch every 4 hours and change it every other day; change the wafer every 4 days.

3. Sweat Control:
- Apply a swipe of antiperspirant above the wafer to reduce sweat and help the barrier stick.
- Seal the wafer edge with paper tape for better hold during perspiration and swimming.

4. Skin Comfort and Adhesion:
- Wash with Dial Gold Original or Zest Original soap to avoid residue that weakens adhesive.
- Avoid tissues with lotion to prevent oils from transferring to the skin.
- Warm the flange with a hair-dryer before removing its backing, then let the adhesive air for a minute for longer wear.
- Use moisture-absorbing powder between the pouch and skin to reduce friction and dampness.

5. Output Control and Leak Prevention:
- Eat a few mini marshmallows to pause output while changing the appliance.
- Beano tablets can help minimize gas.
- Use Par-Sorb absorbent crystals or charcoal-based Trio Diamonds sachets to thicken liquid output, reduce noise, extend wear time, and curb odor.

6. Odor Management:
- Use Hollister M9 deodorant drops.
- Drop two Tic Tacs into the pouch after each emptying for a minty scent.
- Charcoal-based Trio Diamonds sachets can eliminate odor when emptying away from home.

7. Additional Tips:
- Flush the toilet immediately after emptying to limit room odor.
- Drop a piece of toilet paper into the bowl before emptying to prevent splash.
- Consider giving your ostomy a name to make conversations easier and provide a discreet way to discuss any issues with friends.

8. Supplies and Samples:
- Edgepark.com offers Par-Sorb crystals and other items with knowledgeable reps, insurance billing, and free shipping.
- Hollister provides free samples of New Image products upon request.
