Ileostomy and Back Passage Removal Surgery Experience

This topic is about the experiences and expectations of someone who is undergoing surgery to remove the remaining rectal stump after having an ileostomy due to Crohn’s disease. The person is concerned about the pain and recovery process after the surgery. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have been through similar experiences:

1. After the surgery, immediate pain is usually well managed with modern pain relief methods in hospitals. Many people report not experiencing severe pain.

2. Once the strong painkillers are reduced, some discomfort is expected, but it is often manageable and considered worth it for the relief from removing the diseased rectum.

3. Hospital stays can be relatively short, around 5-7 days, but the complete healing of the perineal wound can take several weeks or even months, which is normal.

4. Be aware of possible complications such as:
- Infections at the surgical site or stitch line, which can occur a few days after the operation.
- Reactions to blood transfusions if needed.
- Ongoing mucus leakage from the perineal wound, which some people with Crohn’s experience for a long time.

5. A hygiene tip is to be extra careful when using hospital toilets right after surgery to avoid infections.

6. Some chronic issues that might arise after multiple abdominal surgeries include adhesions, numbness, and visceral pain. Suggestions for managing these include:
- Acupuncture, which might be covered by Medicare in some areas.
- Using a TENS machine for short-term pain relief.
- Lyrica (pregabalin) for nerve pain, though it may lead to weight gain and hernias.

7. For seating comfort during recovery:
- A doughnut cushion can help reduce pressure when sitting.
- An egg-crate–style pad or pillow might be more comfortable for some, as a doughnut cushion can sometimes increase discomfort depending on body shape.

8. Quitting smoking is highlighted as beneficial for recovery and long-term health by several people.
