Friends Day

Posted by xnine

Facebook tells me it is Friends Day today. I never would have known. Happy Friends Day to all. Where would we be without our friends

Comments:
Bill : Where indeed!
Bill : Hello xnine. My wife has just been researching 'Valentine's' day for her stroke group and it seems that some friendship days around the world are associated with that. However. I looked it up on Wikipedia and came up with the following: Friendship Day celebrations occur on different dates in different countries. The first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July in 1958, by the World Friendship Crusade.[3] On 27 April 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared[4] 30 July as official International Friendship Day. However, some countries, including India[5], celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. In Oberlin, Ohio, Friendship Day is celebrated on 8 April each year.[6). I then looked up 'friends' day and it seems that this is the celebration of the start of 'facebook' which falls on the 4th February. An interesting topic, which includes comments to the effect that some of these days were initiated by greetings card manufacturers and it is all becoming 'commercialised. For me this somehow distracts from the personal aspects of 'friendship'as I have always appreciated the little freebee, home-made notes and cards rather than those mass-produced and sold. Just a thought! Best wishes Bill
